Mission Statement: "The National Park Service at Cabrillo National
Monument commemorates Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's voyage of exploration and its
significance, and protects, preserves and manages the cultural and natural
resources and associated values in a manner that leaves them
unimpaired while providing a high quality educational and recreational
experience for all visitors."
Uses of your collection available to researchers (e.g. will respond to
written inquiries, archives available by appointment, and the like): The
collection and archives are available by appointment only. The reference
library available during business hours. Checkout privileges are limited
to staff and volunteers of Cabrillo National Monument.
Will you reproduce documents or photographs? We are unable to
reproduce documents or photographs for outside use.
Collection Content: The museum collection currently consists of
approcimately 1,500 history objects, some in storage others on display,
relating to the 19th century Old Point Loma Lighthouse and to coastal defense
systems operating during World Wars I and II. In future years, the
collection will also include natural specimens related to the monument's coastal
Mediterranean and rocky intertidal systems. The archives consists
of approximately 216,000 resource management and administrative history records
related to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and 16th century exploration,
the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, WWI and II coastal defenses, and coastal
mediterranean and rocky intertidal systems, as well as the administrative
history of Cabrillo NM. The reference library consists of approximately
2,800 volumes relating to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and 16th century
exploration, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, WWI and WWII coastal defenses, San
Diego history, maritime history, and coastal Mediterranean and rocky intertidal
ecosystems.
