Address: Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard 1124 E. 7th Street Wilmington, DE 19801 Hours: 1000 - 1600 Mon - Fri, 1200-1600 Sat - Sun Mission Statement: To construct a replica of the KALMAR NYCKEL, Delawares's tall ship, and complete work on an operational historic shipyard, which together will serve as a magnet for tourists, a catalyst for waterfront development, and become a living classroom for a wide variety of educational activities. Description: KALMAR NYCKEL is a replica of a Dutch Pinnace (Pinas) which made four voyages from Sweden to Wilmington (1638 to 1644) for the purpose of bringing Swedish and Finnish settlers to the New World. She is a three masted, square rigged with lateen mizzen, full hulled merchantman of 10 guns and 317 tons displacement. Specifications are: Loa 139 ft, lod 97 ft, lwl 89 ft, draft 12 ft, beam 25 ft height, lwl to main truck 105 ft, sail area 7600 sq ft. It is being built in place on the shore of the Christina River. On site facilities include a mold loft, sail loft, shipsmith, woodcarving and boatbuilding shops, and a visitor center. The hull was launched in September of 1997. Commissioning is scheduled for May 9, 1998. Use of the facility: Archives include drawings of the vessel and photos of the construction process. Access to these archives will be very limited until the vessel is finished and commissioned. |
