Mission Statement: To interpret the cultural, social, economic and political history of the Mobile Bay area and southwest Alabama and its diverse population through the collection, exhibition, research and conservation of artifacts from pre-history to the present, and through related educational programming.

Use of the Collection: Archives accessible by appointment only, no electronic access. Written inquiries responded to within one month.

Photocopies: $0.20/pg. Photos: 4x5 $10, 5x7 $15, 8x10 $20. One month delivery.

Collection Content:

  • General areas - Colonial period, Civil War, Battle of Mobile Bay, armaments. Pre-history - present.
  • Library - 3,000 volumes, 100 vessel technical drawings, 1,000 vessel photos, 10,000 documents.
  • Paintings - 25 displayed, 75 stored: includes riverboats, portraits of CSS HUNLEY, CSS ALABAMA.
  • Models - 10 displayed, 35 stored: full, half hull, cutaways. Includes full models of CSS HUNLEY, CSS ALABAMA and the Admiral Raphael Semmes collection.
