Mission Statement: To document and preserve the historical heritage of Nantucket island.

Use of the Collection: Archives accessible during library hours but appointment advisable for serious researchers. Manuscripts collections accessible through in-house database. Will respond to written inquiries within 3 weeks. Staff research fee $20/hr.

    Photocopies, manuscripts: $0.35/pg, $0.50/pg 30+ copies.
    Photos, b&w: 5x7 glossy $20, 8x10 glossy $25, 8x10 matte $30, 11x14 matte $35. Copy negatives, if required $75-$90.
    Slides, 35mm: $10, oral history tapes $20, videos $30.
    Publication fees $35-$50/image. All prices $5-$10 less for members of Association.
Collection Content:

  • General areas - Whaling tools, equipment and business, local decorative arts.
  • Library - 3900 volumes, 15 vessel technical drawings, 30,000 photos including 325 vessel, 340 shelf feet of manuscripts including 360 log books and 545 account books.
  • Paintings - 123 displayed, 387 stored: mostly personal portraits, some ship portraits, seascapes.
  • Models - 7 displayed, 14 stored: full and half, full include two 18th century sailor-made Nantucket whaling ships.
  • Full scale historic vessels -
    _______ - whaleboat (ca 1870), Beadle built, shown with full complement of whaling gear.
