Mission Statement: Newport Harbor Nautical Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the maritime heritage of Newport Harbor, Southern California and the Pacific through exhibition, continued research and educational programming pertaining to maritime art, artifacts, events and customs.

Use of the Collection:

  • Accessibility:
    Hours: 10 A.M. to 5P.M. Tuesday through Sunday
    Archives are accessible during regular hours and appointments are necessary. Electronic access is not yet available.
  • Charges or fees:
    Copies of documents and photographs are available; inquire about the cost of reproduction.
  • Responses to queries:
    Response to written inquiries is usually within 30 days and E-mail is preferred.

Collection Content:

  • General areas - Newport Harbor History. Model Gallery (Navy, Evolution of Pacific, Emigration in Pacific, Yachting, Eclectic Models). Touring Exhibits (3 per year).

  • Library -
    * Books: 1500 with the main focus on yachting

    * Periodicals and serial publications: Extensive collections on yachting including Lloyds Register of American Yachts, Nautical Quarterly, Sea Magazine and NOSA documents.

    * Vessel photographs: 65000 mainly of yachts including the Sawyer collection (1912 - 1930), the Beckner collection (1940's - 1960's), the Lockabey collection (1930's - 1950's).

  • Paintings - Famous Yachts of Newport (30) yachts. Arthur Beaumont Collection (15) Navy and Fishing.

  • Models - Displayed: 40, Stored: 110

    Types: Shinkle Collection - 48 South Sea Island models. There are models of yachts, naval vessels and models portraying the evolution of ships and emigration in the Pacific. Specialty model types include P.O.W. bone models, Dreppe, presentation, toys, archaeological, and propulsion.

    Especially notable models include a triple expansion engine builders model and a board room model of the S.S. Willochra.
