Mission Statement:. The Society was founded in 1783 by the officers of the Continental line and their French compatriots who served together during the American Revolution. Its original purpose, "to perpetuate the remembrance of the achievement of national independence", is being carried forth today through historical and educational programs.

Use of the Collection: By appointment only, will respond to written inguiries.

Collection Content:

  • General areas - Naval history, shipbuilding. Revolutionary War period.
  • Library - Houses a growing collection of more than 42,000 titles focusing on military and naval history of the American Revolution and the art of war in the eighteenth century. Among its holdings are treatises on military and naval art and science, shipbuilding, maritime law and naval medicine. Material of interest to maritime scholars can also be found among the collection's historical manuscripts, maps and works of art on paper. In addition, the modern reference collection includes general and local histories, biographies, bibliographies and periodicals supporting research on the Revolutionary War period.
