Mission Statement: To document and illustrate the history of the US Navy submarine force.

Use of the Collection: Archives accessible during open hours by appointment. No electronic access. Written responses to brief questions in approx. two weeks. Researchers encouraged to come in person for in-depth searches.

Photocopies of documents provided on courtesy basis for limited number of copies. No capability for reproducing photos. Photographing of photos by researcher permissible.

Collection Content:

  • General area - US Navy submarines and submarine operations.
  • Library - 3,000 volumes. 25,000 vessel photos. 200 feet of shelves containing vertical archival document files. No drawings. Documents include submarine "scrap books", patrol reports, personal papers, subbase New London histories, periodicals, oral histories and John P. Holland papers.
  • Paintings - 3 of USS NAUTILUS(SSN 571)
  • Models - 30 on display. Includes common scale full display model collection depicting major classes of US submarines from HOLLAND to present, HOLLAND waterline, 60 foot cutaway of GATO type WWII fleet boat, full scale cutaway of Bushnell's TURTLE.
  • Full scale historical vessels -
    • USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571), 1954 - first nuclear sub
    • MAILIE, WWII - Italian 2 man sub
    • MATO-8, WWII - Japanese 2 man sub
    • X-1 (SSX-1) Experimental US Navy hydrogen-peroxide powered submarine, 1955-1973
    • Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) for US Navy Seal Teams, 1998
