| AIMS AND GOALS OF THE NRG |
Founded in 1948, the Nautical Research Guild
is an IRS 501(c)(3) approved nonprofit educational organization with an
international membership of historians, ship model makers, artists and
laypersons with a common interest in the history, beauty and technical
sophistication of ships and their models. Our central mission is to
provide support for our members who build historically accurate ship models,
while also satisfying the interests of our maritime historians, scholars,
and students. As our motto says, we are dedicated to "Advancing Ship
Modeling Through Research".
To meet this goal the Guild has published,
for more than 50 years, the Nautical Research Journal, a quarterly magazine
whose articles span the broad spectrum of topics in the linked disciplines
of nautical research and ship model building. The Journal is generally
considered to be the best of its kind in the world at balancing these two
subjects in one publication. We are proud to have been able to provide a
platform for original academic articles from university professors and museum
curators, as well as how-to advice from world renowned ship model builders.
Under our current Board of Directors and Editorial Staff we are confident
that we will continue to publish articles and shop notes of the same stellar
quality.
To further its educational aims, the Guild presents a one-day
symposium twice a year where experienced model builders demonstrate and
illustrate their solutions to some of the many technical challenges that
arise in building a quality ship model. At our annual Conferences the
invited speakers present discussions on topics of both historical and
technical interest. Guild members can benefit from several additional
services, including a Technical Assistance Network to answer model building
questions, a lending research library of specialized maritime and modeling
books, and a networking service that can introduce members to other members
and modeling clubs in their area.
The Guild website at www.thnrg.org is
poised to lead us into the 21st Century. Designed for smooth navigation,
our members can easily take advantage of its many resources. These include
a gallery of photographs displaying the work of our members, a number of
selected articles and Shop Notes from the Journal, and links to many suppliers,
resources, and modeling clubs. Through the website we maintain email networks
where members can easily communicate with each other around the world to share
their information, questions and fellowship.
We look forward to many more years
of service to the ship modeling and maritime communities, and we will constantly
strive to provide the best in modern scholarship and quality advice for those
who wish to join us in "Advancing Ship
Modeling Through Research."
