Conference events begin with tours on Thursday, modeling sessions and round tables on Friday, and general sessions on Saturday. Friday and Saturday sessions include a buffet lunch (deli sandwich bar on Friday and taco bar on Saturday).
Your registration includes access to the Maritime Museum of San Diego Thursday through Sunday – just show your name badge. The museum is a six block walk from the hotel. Transportation will be provided on a limited basis.
The museum includes several significant ships: the steam ferry, Berkley, the iron-hulled 1863 bark, Star of India, the HMS Surprise, used in filming Master and Commander, the topsail schooner, Californian, the America’s Cup racer, America, among others. The larger ships also contain model displays and historical exhibits.
Thursday’s tour also includes a sail around San Diego bay on the topsail schooner Californian.
The charge for the sailing tours will be a very affordable $55 per person. Space is limited to two sailings of 45 each on Thursday, so register early! Select either the morning or afternoon cruise. We will try to accommodate your preference, but we cannot guarantee it – again, register early, when it’s full it’s full! This will be an excellent opportunity to see a real sailing vessel in operation (and even get your hands dirty).
Friday will feature the modeler's Tech Sessions with talks in the morning and round tables in the afternoon. Morning sessions include Ken Foran on modeling with brass and a panel discussion on the building of a Sixth Rate Swan Class model, among other topics. The afternoon round tables will include a demo by Sherline, among other topics.
Saturday will begin with General Sessions, followed by the Annual Meeting, and conclude with the Banquet. Speakers include Doug Sharp, Naval Architect for the recreation of the San Salvador, Randy Biddle on the Chaleur, Michel Mantin from Paris, France on the Battleship Fuso, and Carolyn Kennedy of the INA about the Steamboat graveyard in Shelbourn, VT. Our banquet speaker is Dr. Ray Ashley, head of the San Diego Maritime Museum.
We have contracted for a large model/vendor room. Several very strong local clubs are coordinating and supporting the model show, and plenty of great models will be on display. Each model entered will be issued a name plate with model and modeler info. To show a model, you must fill out the model registration form so we can prepare your nameplate and display space. Vendors include Ages of Sail, Model Craft Tools, Sherline Products, and Train Troll.
Hope to see you in San Diego!
