Established in August of 1971 by local ship model craftsmen Bob Wright and Russ Merrill; the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild originally met aboard the bark STAR OF INDIA.

In 2021 we celebrate our 50th year as a Guild. 

Who We Are

We're scale model shipcrafters... we range in age from under 18 to over 90... we're from all walks of life... we have Members with decades of expertise and those just starting their first build... 

What We Do

We work mostly in wood but also craft in resin, plastic, card... we build from kits... we build from scratch... we craft a variety of forms: full models, half hulls, dioramas, shadow boxes and more... we're an active guild: we hold monthly meetings aboard the steam ferry BERKELEY on San Diego's Embarcadero... we have a subgroup of Members that also meet monthly and work on a common model... we operate the Museum Model Shop on board the BERKELEY... we annually staff a working exhibition booth during the San Diego County Fair and participate in the Design in Wood competition... we do outreach presentations to area schools... we participate in the annual Festival Of The Sea... we have regular presentations on technique and craftsmanship...
